Does Aromatherapy Really Work?

Aromatherapy is the usage of aromatic materials such as essential oils and other aroma compounds, for the improvement of psychological and physical well-being. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years and continue to be used today as ingredients in medicines and in medical applications.

Administration of medicine

There are various ways to administer and get the medicine to the required location of the body. One method of administering medicine is through breathing it in, or aromatherapy. Asthma patients will use an inhaler pump to administer medicine directly into the lungs and relax the muscles of the airways.

Aromatherapy with a diffuser allows for a variety of essential oils to be used, administering the natural, healing oils into your lungs and onto the bloodstream.

Essential oils

Essential oils are concentrated hydrophobic liquids containing volatile chemical compounds from plants. Through steam distillation or cold pressing, essential oils capture the essence of the plant, delivering concentrated characteristics of the plant in a form that can be used for scenting or healing.

Essential oils and plant substances have been used in treating many health concerns for as long as we have records. Aromatherapy with essential oils, through scientific studies, have demonstrated to be effective in various medical situations. Depending on the ailment, use the appropriate essential oil for overall healing through aromatherapy.

Do not heat essential oils

Heating any type of oil will change the chemical structure of the oil. Each oil has a unique heat (smoking point) where the oil breaks down and becomes toxic. Studies completed point to how oils used for cooking become rancid and toxic upon heating and reaching the smoking point. In the same way that cooking oils break down chemically with heat, so do essential oils.

Use an atomizing diffuser for aromatherapy

Most people and brands use ultrasonic diffusers for aromatherapy. These diffusers are not effective and for true aromatherapy treatments, an atomizing diffuser is the best type of diffuser. An atomizing (nebulizing) diffuser uses a highly pressurized air stream to atomize essential oils and distribute them throughout the whole room or whole home whichever you desire.

Atomizing diffusers diffuse pure oils

An atomizing diffuser creates microscopic oil particles from the oil itself. There is no need to add the oil to the water as you would with an ultrasonic diffuser. Rather than a stream of steam from the ultrasonic diffuser, the flow of air and oil from the atomizing diffuser is pure oil. The impact of oil purity is profound.

Oil particle sizes

The percentage of the lung and chest cavity filled with essential oils in aromatherapy impacts the effectiveness of the session and essential oil. The smaller the particles, the deeper the oil can travel into the lung. The ideal oil particle size is 2.5 microns.

Yes, aromatherapy does work. Using the correct diffusers and ensuring that your essential oils are truly derived from the plants*, you are sure to receive tremendous benefits from aromatherapy sessions.
