How to Give My Store a Beach Scent

Updated: Apr 7, 2023

Years ago, I was doing some coaching when one of the kids said to me that I smell like the beach! We were about 300 miles from the ocean and so at first, I was confused by the statement. What about the way I smelt reminded the kids of the beach? After some consideration, I put it together.

Scent bypasses the thalamus and heads straight for the brain's olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb is directly connected to the amygdala and hippocampus, which might explain why the smell of something can immediately trigger a detailed memory or even intense emotion.

Scent associates memories

The scent of my sunscreen triggered memories of the beach times when the kids would have used sunscreen. The scent of the sunscreen that I was wearing was associated with the beach and the enjoyable holiday or vacation times. Just the scent of my sunscreen triggered all of the memories and emotions, I didn't need to say a word. It is for this reason that many companies have started to use scent in their retail stores.

Set the store vibe

Using scent in a retail store is a sure way to set the scene and tie the store's theme and ambiance together. A surf shop by the beach smelling like sunscreen will help customers associate the products in the store with the beach, but also remind them of the happy vacations spent on the beach with family and friends.

Diffuse beach scent oil in your store

There are various solutions to adding scent to your store. Our Aroma customers have found that our atomizing diffusers for essential and scent blend oils are the most effective way. The diffuser places pure oil into the store for the perfect scent. Programmed, the diffuser gives store owners the ability to control the scent strength and timing of when it is diffused. Our Aroma is the vendor of choice to many national and international retail stores, hotels, and businesses.
