Moisturize Your Skin After Time in the Sun

Your skin or epidermis is the largest organ in or on your body. The organ is porous allowing a product applied to be soaked up and into the deeper layers of the skin. Topically applied products are commonly used to administer medicine to muscles through the skin's ability to absorb the product.

The porosity of the skin

In the same way that lotions and medicines can be absorbed through the skin the flow of moisture can flow in the opposite direction.

What are the symptoms of dehydration?

The following are the most common symptoms of dehydration. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

  • Thirst

  • Less-frequent urination

  • Dry skin

  • Fatigue

  • Light-headedness

  • Dizziness

  • Confusion

  • Increased heart rate and breathing

How can dehydration be prevented?

Take precautionary measures to avoid the harmful effects of dehydration, including the following:

  • Drink plenty of fluids, especially when working or playing in the sun.

  • Make sure you are taking in more fluid than you are losing.

  • Try to schedule physical outdoor activities for the cooler parts of the day.

  • Drink appropriate sports drinks to help maintain electrolyte balance.

  • For infants and young children, solutions such as Pedialyte will help maintain electrolyte balance during illness or heat exposure. Do not try to make fluid and salt solutions at home for children.

Skin dehydration from the sun

While you are spending time out in the sun this summer having fun, the sun is wicking away the moisture of your largest organ, the skin. While you can drink liquids to replenish the loss of liquids internally, your skin needs moisture applied directly.

Sunburn isn't just from the sun's rays

While you may see the effect of the UVA and UVB rays from the sun with a red coloring of your skin, an important indication of sunburn is the drying out of the skin. With summer bringing warmer weather, dehydration, and sunburn are far easier to experience. As part of your routine, you need to apply moisture to your skin.

After Sun Oil for moisture

Many companies advocate using gel to help with sunburn and the recuperation of your skin from time in the sun. There are some key ingredients though in these gels that are problematic and counter the attempt to add moisture back into the skin.

  • Alcohol

  • Triethanolamine

  • Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate
